We started way back when. Gerald started installing in 1969 for a retailer, then in 1970 started his own business. That makes 40 years on his knees - even preachers don't do that! 1989 we started inspecting floors so that's now 20 years. In l993 we opened a retail flooring store, another 16 years, and yes Gerald is still installing some. You probably can't count mine but if you add mine in, I did all the bookwork & scheduling for the installation business, joined the inspections at the same time and of course I'm still in the retail end today.

I started helping my sisters husband(my then brother-in-law) when I was 12, during summers. So that is 34 years ago. Wow! Time flies.

We most certainly do count yours, Pat. The business end of the flooring business is as much a part of the floorcovering business as any other part.

Gerald and Pat, both of your years should count. My wife isn't a member so hers don't. but she measured, scheduled, ordered supplies, strip and padded. trimmed carpet, moved furn, helped me lay out big vinyl jobs, etc, until her health made her quit about 5 years ago.

Oh, we are guessing the total after all said and done...

I say 1500 years combined.

That would be 39 years for me...and I still learn something new about this business every day.
This is a most interesting topic...who would have thought we could come up with that many years. What a great group!

Tandy Reeves said I understand you still haven't grown a full head of hair. BTW does CFI have any young people in an apprentice training program? Out of 41 pros that have entered their years in the business only one (1) has 5 years, and the next is 12 years. As rg stated in post #50, this industry is running out of people.

Thanks. I've never solicited work before. Until the past 3-6 months it's always come looking for me. Right now I'm enjoying the summer with my whole family home and together for the first time in a while. We're going to do some traveling and then entertaining guests and extended family in our home.

When the party's over if things aren't happening for me I'll be sure to take you up on that offer. Looks like a nice addition to the website.

About 22 years of flooring for me. First couple years were sort of part time and then 3 years when I thought this was only going to be temporary until I started a "real" job. After that I took it a bit more serious.
Also have another 12 years of construction/handyman experience under my belt prior to doing floors.
