The forum features a way to quote a message in your own without having to do any Copy & Paste trickery. It's a very easy procedure, but some don't yet understand how it works. This, I hope, will clear up any confusion and help you to take fuller advantage of the possibilities for using this feature to make your own messages easier to comprehend.
Quoting, in its most basic form, couldn't be easier. Just look for the big quote button in any individual message, in the lower right corner. When you want to quote the message inside your message, just click that button (as seen at right) in the message you want to quote and it will open the message editor with all the formatting and text that you need.
As an example, I will take a recent message, by our very own Tandy Reeves, and show you what it would look like in the message editor if you clicked the quote button:
Sometimes, especially with longer messages that you want to quote, the points you want to make might refer to different parts of the quoted message. You can separate the important parts very easily by using the "quote tags", as in the following screen shot. These changes must be done manually though, so care must be taken that the tags are in the proper format.
The important parts of quoting are those tags. Here is an explanation of the tags you see in these screen shots:
[QUOTE=Tandy Reeves;18211] - This, along with the message you are quoting and the closing quote tag, will result in a box surrounding the quoted message and it is identified as a quote identifying the member who made it and there will be a small graphic arrow that, when clicked, will take you to the original message.
[QUOTE] - This tag does not contain the identifying information and, along with the message you are quoting and the closing quote tag, will result in a box surrounding the quoted message only. This tag, or the above, more elaborate identifying tag, is necessary for properly quoting a message.
[/QUOTE] - This is the closing quote tag. Without it, the box surrounding the quoted message will not appear and there will be other characters that may confuse the reader. It is necessary to include this tag at the end of any quoted text.
Perhaps the easiest way of all to quote a message is via the
Quick Reply feature. Most of you are already familiar with the Quick Reply and that you must click the Quick Reply button (as shown at right) to be able to type text into the message editor at the bottom of any topic. Notice that there is a small box at the lower left of the Quick Reply editor that you can check to have the Quick Reply include the quoted message. Be sure that the Quick Reply button you click is also the button inside the message you want to quote.
I hope this helps you understand the function of the quote feature a little better. Please feel free to test it out here in this topic, if you wish. If you have any problems or questions, this is a great way to solve them.
