Re: The Privacy Policy Has Changed

Let me guess, someone wanted you to remove all their posts, after they can no longer participate.

Re: The Privacy Policy Has Changed

No, that is incorrect. We occasionally get "reported posts" complaining that a real name was mentioned instead of the nick-name. As the forum becomes busier, these requests become more work. Almost always the reported use of real names occurs in The Professional Forums, which are private forums for pros only. The posts where these occur are usually not an intentional or malicious act and do no real harm. Most of the time, the real name is no secret to most of the members anyway.

We still will ask all to honor any member's wish to remain anonymous and to refrain from using the real name of any member who uses a nick-name. There will never be any confirmation by staff that a real name belongs to a particular member. As long as the issue goes unacknowledged, it should be a non-issue.

I do want to make it clear though that any member who purposely and repeatedly reveals the real name of anyone who uses a nick-name in order to cause trouble for that member, will have their participation here severely restricted. On the other hand, no member will be able to use anonymity to cause problems or security risks here if we can help it. We don't protect those who don't follow the rules.

Oh, I see... This involves little `ol me.

Thanks for making it clear to Ray, he is always trying to cause trouble. LOL!
I understand that everyone who participates regularly, knows who I am. But I have been TOLD, not to post on message boards, by several different manufacturers, if I want to keep inspecting for them. I hope you understand... It is that, or I have to quit participating all together, and go through some deep withdrawls!

Re: The Privacy Policy Has Changed

It wasn't all about you, Floorguy, but you made this topic about you. So, let's use you as an example. You complain when someone uses your real name in a post, yet in your profile, you post a picture of yourself and a link to your website, which plainly identifies you. That kind of nullifies the complaint, doesn't it?

You also continue to post on other sites where others know you by your real name. Have these manufacturers threatened your employment for that recently?

Any manufacturers telling you not to post on message boards are trying to control you. Are you their employee? And do you think their harsh judgment of message boards could be from past experience with other message boards? Try giving them a link to this one. In fact, if you contact me privately, I will give you a VIP login and password for them - or I can mail you some cards that include that info.

This change did NOT focus on you, although it does include you - and everyone else who has used a nick-name and complained when someone called them by name. I do not want to be held responsible for anyone's lack of discretion. If you fear your participation here, which for the most part has been very professional and of great benefit to the industry, jeopardizes your employment, then I fear what this industry has come to.

PS: Before you continue to think you are taken lightly around here, Floorguy... have you seen the footer of this site - all the pages of this site - in the last couple of weeks?

Re: The Privacy Policy Has Changed

I was in the middle of a discussion relating to this when a friend of mine came to visit. He asked, so I told him about this issue. After discussing it with him, he helped me conclude that if Floorguy needs for us to do a little extra work, we will. It doesn't matter that you help people discover your real name and that you use it elsewhere or that a great majority of members of this and other forums know who you really are. If you'll sleep better knowing we will do our part to make you feel more comfortable here and go to extra lengths to protect your anonymity, then that's what we'll do.

Thanks anyway, even if you don't understand. That's what makes this place better then all the rest.
