help

I just copied or made a back up of my web site,
Mr. Admint, I have a new site or host, paid for, and promotion tools paid for.
I have a large amount of key words,
and I want to move it. Now, the man presently "in charge" of my site has gotten pissed. Seems I was not suppose to ask questions, like where the key words were, how they worked, m.tags, or how to edit the site myself. When I told him I wanted to change the host to another one with a promotion tool to get on all the search engines, he wanted me to go to his "local server". I said no, this is biz and I want work from it, and since the mills don't call on me much anymore, I need more traffic on the site,,,he is mad not speaking to me. He does not know I went to the site today, and made a back up.
ok, now, I can try to do this, or I can pay, what is the charge to move it over this weekend?
I posted this here because there may be others who might want to change host also but need someone to do it,,,can you do this, like, this weekend? how much, the check, of course, is in the mail! I am making a "referral" to Dan's post about the check, but, serious, if not too much, I will put one in the mail tomorrow, just let me know

Re: help

Hi Selva,

Glad I was online when you posted this, so this is a quick reply.

Moving a website to a new server involves a few steps:
  1. Obtain a new account at a website host, which will provide you with a domain name server address
  2. The domain name server must be changed at the domain name registrar
  3. Move all folders and files associated with the domain to the new server
  4. Wait for propagation (up to 72 hours or so)
It's not difficult if you know what you are doing. You need access to your domain registrar to be able to change records and access to your old server's file system (through FTP) to collect all the folders and files. Total time involved would be around an hour. I charge $40.00 per - minimum would still be 40.00. Send me an email with your passwords and account addresses (the domain registrar and the new host) and I'll take care of it right away. If you don't have a host for the new site, I have my own server and will rent you space on it. Give me a call or an email and we can talk specifics. 530-283-5467 or jm@enterprisejm.com.

Re: help

Oh yeah, I got the money. Thanks. I decided I'd go out an' get drunk before I did the work though. Hope you don't mind.

JUST KIDDING! I am working on it now. I wanted to make sure I got good backups, so I did straight file backups (as opposed to compressed archive backups) and just finished. I'm headed to your domain registrar now to make DNS changes.

T
PS: thanks again, Selva. You paid way more than I asked for and I really appreciate it. I can certainly use it.

Re: help

hey, it is in the low 60s tonight,
I poured a big glass of wine, went outside, sat on my old house/barn with the second story porch,,, we don't use fancy words in Laurens,
and sipped it, listening to the trains, and night birds, and neighbors yelling at each and the shotgun blasts and pistolie shots, ahh, the sweet sound of life in a small souther town,

Re: help

You're all set to go, Selva. I gave you the run-down in a PM. The site will propagate in less than 72 hours. Once that happens, you can close your account with the other service.

Re: help

I will let "him" do that,
I will let Mr. Admint make changes a little at time, and maybe he can walk me thru it so I can learn a little,,,, and he can make a few bucks, and maybe I can increase traffic to it and start to make some money off it,,,,
as I understand it, the old one was not set up to be found by search engines,

first, change what I understand is images to text, and set up the right kind of links,
then, more text and articles,
slt

Well, search engines found it, they just didn't find much there. Your original landing page was mostly an advertisement for the other webmaster. There was an "Enter" link, but that's a complete waste of Web technology. Below that there was a huge webmaster logo and a link to his website - and a link to him at the bottom of every page too (that part is pretty standard). Once you get inside, the main page is nothing but a combination of images that search engines can't read. Even the image names aren't using keywords that might help.

So, what Selva and maybe others have learned is that looks are deceiving. It's really an attractive looking site, but it's not an effective site. It doesn't even work well for visitors using a 1024x768 screen resolution - the image sizes make horizontal scroll bars appear. The site uses Flash technology, which is a pretty effect, but it doesn't index well in search engines. The images don't use keyword rich names, as I mentioned. There's names like "about_04.jpg", "home_10.jpg", etc., instead of names like "tucks-flooring-logo.jpg", wilton-carpet.jpg" and "fci-magazine-logo.jpg".

Even the main text of the home page is an image. Search engines can't read the text in an image. They can read the file name, but even that doesn't relate at all to the website. The most important part of the home page is this:

The only part of that a search engine can read is the file name, "home_14.jpg."

In time, Selva will change some of this to give himself better search engine results. I'm glad I was able to help him a little over the last couple of days.

Re: help

Tho my understanding of this is extremely small.................... the part about the "home_14.jpg." ................is astounding. How in hell would a guy know that was only visible as a jpg?
Selva's in good hands......................... ......... but remember T, he's lonely, and neither of you are married.

Read somewhere that Google is going to be more selective with its results .. Less but more to what the person is actually looking for .. I'll see if i can find the article ..

Re: help

Good tip for us novice webflunkies, uh, I mean webmasters.

So your saying it is a very good idea and really needed, to change all the names of your picture files, to relect keywords????

I finally got my web maker program to do something I wanted, but after you say the image keyword thing, I'm wondering if it make all my text in the adjustable box, an image file and not text???
