This week past I worked on 3 different custom rugs for a nearby school. There was nothing difficult about making the rugs, however, the fact that the carpet was a C&A foam-backed product presented some challenges. The 3 following rugs are Jurassic in proportion and will no doubt cause the little souls who behold them to require moderate therapy.
The above fish had a couple different thicknesses to the various colors/carpets used in its construction. Moreover, the prescribed method of seaming was simply applying a C&A sealer then butting the edges together.
Knowing that the little tykes would likely be pulling on every conceivable part of the fish's anatomy, perhaps causing failure, I considered adding piranha-esque teeth in an effort to keep the little vermin at bay. I decided against it and used book-binding tape to abridge the seams for added strength.
The oval in Mr. Turtle measured 12'3 x 15'6 and was located in the day-care room. One visiting little Princess was informed that Mr. Turtle had consumed a boy visitor only an hour before. Her response? "Bad turtle! Spit him out!"
Mr. Flutterby, (yes you read that right contended little Sally) of course is an insect. The rather frail looking neck of Mr. Flutterby may take a bit of a beating in the days and months to come so I considered adding two tarantula-type fangs repleate with dripping venom. Of course, the fact I would not be paid extra from my artistic contribution kept me from making the ghoulish addition which I'm sure will spare countless children endless hours of therapy. (
Welcome to school kids!)
The quoted price for supply and manufacture of these 3 rugs was 17k. The boys from Dalton warned that this job could not be done on-site, it was too difficult. Strange what some people will say when trying to protect an inordinately high quote. I simply walked up to the money tree and asked myself how much I wanted to put in the basket - filled her up pretty good because anything under 17k would seem like a windfall for the customer.
I'm proud to report I did save them some money . . .well, . . . a bit.
