This discussion, "Tile Cutter for large format diagonal snapping", in Tools, Equipment and Supplies (part of the category The Professional Forums), begins, "What I'm looking for may not be made. Been getting more and more calls for 18 x 18 (and up) ..."
What I'm looking for may not be made. Been getting more and more calls for 18 x 18 (and up) porcelains on a diagonal and I have been making wet cuts. It sure would be nice to be able to snap most of these. I'm not concerned about exposed transition cuts, those will be wet cut anyway.
I found a pretty good deal on a barely used Rubi TX-900 (not the N series) but the guy who owns it said it's hit or miss on making off center diagonal cuts. Off center cuts are my main criteria ... I want something that is more hit than miss
I've also have been reading up on the Tomecanic cutters.
I realize snapping porcelains depends on the the itself but surely someone makes a reliable snapper for smooth and not too hard porcelains. Any suggestions?
Re: Tile Cutter for large format diagonal snapping
I almost always wet cut.
Customers don't like to see alot of waste especially when they are paying a considerable amount for the tile. A $5 a sq ft tile means that they are paying $11.25 per 18" tile.
I prefer Rubi cutters myself but many like the Sigma/Tomecanics/Porcelain King types.
Re: Tile Cutter for large format diagonal snapping
when porcelains first came out, I couldn't find a tile break that could consistently make the same cut everytime, or even sometime. Finally hooked up with a Tomecanic and haven't found a porcelain it can't handle. Mine's 25 inches from front to back barely fits a 18 on the diagonal, and still snaps to perfection. The spring loaded tray took a tile or two to get used to and tray though half the size of the entire cutter, still comfortably fits the tile on the cutter. With the 20's and even 24 inch tiles becoming popular, buying the large cutter could be a good idea.
My brotherinlaw has a nice rubi....great cutters also. I used it once and did a great job, but something I didn't like, but I can't recall what it was...HEHEHE
Re: Tile Cutter for large format diagonal snapping
I'm leaning to wards the Tomecanic, but then I keep going back to that Rubi.... mmmmm....what to do ? . Anything would be better than what I am using now.

Re: Tile Cutter for large format diagonal snapping
For me it's Sigma, hands down. I've tried the Rubi and it's OK but not in the same league as my Sigma. I can't say anything about the Tomcanic though as I've never used one.

Haven't used it. Don't install anymore. But they don't make a bad (or cheap) tool.
Check out this little honey. Does everything but cook your lunch! I think it runs about $14- 1500 (!!!). GS 86 Portable Tile Saw
I've got a lot of tile work to do at my house.
"But Honey, if I buy that saw, it'll only cost me what I could pay to have it done by someone else." LOL
