Utility knifes for lino?

When I was getting my quick training from the forbo guy, he told me to buy "good" utility knives. I didn't think too much about it at the time but have since wondered what "good" means. He had sharks, which did feel pretty good. What makes a knife "good" and why? What are all you guys using, and why?

Thanks,
Bryan

I've always used two Stanley knives, one with a straight utility blade and one with a hook blade. That's what give me the best grip.

Airway and orcons basic utility.
Like the feel and blades of the airway.

This is what I use too. I use hook blades made in Germany. I cannot find a utility blade I am really happy with (the tips break) so I just change the blades often.

I use a Ward knife, with a standard utility blade in it, and the curved handle Orcon with a Crain hook blade.

I agree. I have used an Airway for as long as I can remember. Blades are more expensive, but I like the feel of it.

Re: Utility knifes for lino?

i have 2 basic orcon knives in pouch always, both have utility blades. but the luan blades are nice whenever i get my hands on them. i have 2 knives because if one goes dull at the wrong time (raceing glue drying) i have a quick backup ready.

There is a make of tools here called Richard (pronounced Rishaaard), they all have all yellow and green handles. Their hook knife is a particular favourite with us, and we found a couple of replacement knives at Home Depot, but in their PAINT section. We use Olfa utility knives along with them. We take the older, dulled lino knives, snap off the tip, and use them for tucking carpet, or simply use them for pulling staples when doing a ripout.

I don't do lino. But for vinyl, I use Crain and Roberts utility knives. I used Hyde hook knives for years, but the blades don't seem to be as good a quality as they once were. They don't hold an edge very long.

I will have to buy a few different ones to try. I have a bunch on Stanley knives but doing tile I really didn't use them as often as I am using them now. In fact I mostly just used my flip open knife that I keep hooked to my pocket.

I use the airway and a crain utility knife, an armstrong bent hook knife. Not so much the airway as I have had them break more often that not. Personna is coming out with so new scrapers and knives. I saw them at Surfaces.

I couldnt cut in a vinyl without my Airway hook knife.

Well I probably could but I shudder at the results

Re: Utility knifes for lino?

I ran out of airway blades on a vinyl job a while back and had to finish with a utility knife. I absolutely hated it. Now I always have a few extra 10 packs of blades on the truck. Usually I only use a utility knife for cutting plywood or cutting pad during a carpet installation.
