Carpet binding machine.

I own a retail flooring store for about 8 years. Until now i always sent out my rugs and runners to be bound and serged. i am now thinking of buying our own bind/serge machine and doing it in-house.

any tips or opions? once i do decide to go ahead and get one, which are good for my use? i dont need one that can run 24 hours straight etc. i need a pretty easy to use strong machine. i really dont know much about them so any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

No matter what kind of machine you get remember that they are temperamental as all get out. They work one minute and then they don't. Put it aside and come back to it it works.
They are also a one person machine. don't let anybody else use it.
I myself have 4 Binding Brutes that are portable.{National Carpet Equipment} I have had a Binding Brute since 1992 and its still working. One thing is that you have to maintain them and periodically send it back to have a real good tune up. Get the manuals and read it many times and familiar your self to the machine and how to make most adjustments on it and maintain it yourself as much as possible. I put about $400 per year into mine to keep them in top shape. The reason for 4 is they do break down when you are most busy. I have had more than one do it on me at the same time.

I see you are from Jersey, here is a place close to you. I have a Bond machine and it is very much like the Brute. This place stocks the binding and they can work on the machines too.

When Daris says they are temperamental that is an understatement. Sometimes they will drive you insane.

We do all of our binding/ surging/ fringing in house and after 25 years of using portable binders, we stepped about 5 years ago to the the table mounted NC binders and surgers. We will never go back. From custom rugs to samples, to stair runners, to carpet base. And like everybody else has said, they can be very touchy, so have one or two people who know the machine inside and out, have great communication with whoever you purchase from, and be willing to make and investment for a better quality machine.
